What you should know BEFORE having liposuction

The following is a list of possibly problems that could arise during liposuction. We choose to cover these issues from the beginning so that you, as the patient, will feel well informed and comfortable asking the doctor about any issues of concern.

Brusing and Swelling - while this is usually slight because of the technique we use, there is a chance for more substantial bruising. However, any brusing generally, disappears in about ten days.

Bleeding - a very uncommon complication. It is realistic to say, "The amount of blood taken for the preoperative lab tests is more blood than will be seen during your Tumescent Technique Liposuction."

Infection - also a very rare complication. The tumescent technique liposuction uses small cannulas available, therefore the incisions needed are very slight. This reduces any chance of infection to the patient. Since our physicians insist on seeing you within a day or two after surgery and then regularly after that, any infection will be caught immediately and treated with antibiotics.

Temporary Change in Skin Sensation - possible light numbness may occur in the area where liposuction was performed, these sensations return in a month or so. Note that this may be a slight change in skin sensation, not a loss of skin sensation.

Skin Surface Irregularities or Assymmetries - usually resolve in 6-8 weeks. You may need to massage persistent areas nightly for approximately 15 minutes to assist in improving any irregularities. Any significant asymetries can be corrected with a touch-up or follow-up treatment with Ultrasound.

Accumulation of Fluid in the Suctioned Areas is Know as Seromas - This can be resolved quite easily with a few visits to the office for our Ultrasound treatments. If this is ineffective, the fluid may require aspiration with a small needle.

There have been no reported fatalities due to the Tumescent Liposuction Technique. a recent study showed 17,562 cases were reviewed without any serious complications. Generally, any past serious complications or fatalities during liposuction have involved general anesthesia. The Image Cosmetic Center does not use this method of anesthesia.

Exessive pain is almost nonexistent with Tumescent liposuction. This less traumatic method of liposuction causes less bruising, almost no bleeding and therefore greatly reduces the amount of post-operative pain. A great deal of our patient's state that all they needed was Extra Strength Tylenol (or something similar). Our physicians will prescribe a pain medication post operatively if needed/requested.
